As of 6/9/06 I still have not ordered any foam or fiberglass, so I have been trying to work on templates and jigs until I have enough money saved to place an order.

This is the turtleback jig.  I made some modifications from the plan version.  First, I added 1.25 inches to the depth of the arc of the front jig, but kept the last jig the same so that it would fit the plans size firewall.  I readjusted the arc depths of the intermediate jigs to create a nicely tapered curve between the first and 5th jig.

To create the new curve between jigs 1 and 5 I followed a procedure described by Wayne Hicks on the Canard Zone Forum.  Here is a link to that description (see post #12):  http://www.canardzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=718
I kept the width of the turtleback the same as that called out for in the plans.

My other modifications came in the way that I constructed the turtleback jig.  I am building this jig way ahead of when I will actually be building the turtleback, so I wanted something that I could easily take a part and store until I needed it.   Therefore, I used screws to hold all of the pieces together.
Second, I wanted to make the jig portable, so I attached the two 2x4s that run down each side to a piece of plywood.  I then marked the centerline on the plywood and aligned the jigs from that.  I fastened 2x4 blocks on top of the 2x4s running down each side and then put screws through the jigs into the 2x4 blocks.  This made it very easy to align the jigs vertically and firmly attach the jigs to the longitudinally running 2x4s.
